REVIEW: HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING AT PLAYWRIGHTS HORIZONS

Somewhere in Wyoming, four alumni come to celebrate their former mentor’s elevation to President of Transfiguration College. While there, they each grapple with great moral dilemmas shining a light on their sometimes confusing but steadfast Christian Conservative values while looking forward to seeing an Eclipse. The play opens with the very able and contained Justin (Jeb Kreager), a former soldier having just shot a deer and attempting to gut it with (great difficulty)a metaphor foreshadowing the dilemmas of what we come to learn during the play.

This was a challenging play, and if you like to think and be entertained at the same time, then here is a good challenge for you. All five conservative characters were fascinating and distinctive from this progressive New Yorkers’ perspective. The characters were fleshed out into broader human beings than the often predictable conservative pundits we see on television. They are relatable people to liberal ears who don’t engage with the right-wing battle cry. That is precisely why I recommend seeing Heroes of the Fourth Turning. It pulled back the curtain from a window liberals usually keep closed, locked, and shielded from any daylight. If you love watching a debate as I do, well, then this is worth being in a quandary over…
