I felt like I was out in the rain for In the Shelter of the Fold. A dance piece by Doug Varone and dancers with Bang on the Can All-Stars PUBLIQuartet. Music by Lesley Flanigan, Michael Gordon, Kevin Keller, David Lang, Raz Mesinai and Julia Wolfe. Costume Design by Eileen Fisher. NO, just kidding, by Liz Prince replicating Eileen Fisher. A hodgepodge pidge podge of random renegade choreography, In the Shelter Of The Fold, left everything to be desired, utmost, to leave the theater. I could assign many words to this production, but at the top of my list I wouldn’t even say this was good enough to bad, it was bad enough to be boring. There is little to say except Bang on the Can All-Stars was crisp and on point, but they weren’t enough to want to make me stay planted in my seat. Instead, I uprooted myself during a much-needed intermission. The only moment that was remotely in sync and fluid was when the artistic director, Doug Varone performed “Field” with Courtney Barth in perfect, simple, harmonious balance. Most of the male dancers seemed liked they leaped from their beds on to the stage. Go back to square one and find the way forward with energy and inspiration; this had none.
