Review: A Very Meow Meow Holiday Show

MEOW MEOW AKA MELISSA MADDEN GRAY

BAM ended their 2019 Christmas program with the very fabulous, charming and amazing MEOW MEOW. The cat with nine lives MEOW WOWED the audience into adoration with her playful ensemble of musicians, which included: Mark Jones, Dan Witton, and Jethro Woodward. Having never seen Ms. Meow Meow aka Melissa Madden Gray before, I was delighted by her marvelous humor and extroverted joie de vivre. When she entered the theater by climbing through the crowd in a roughed up gold gown with a sack of flat blow up toys tied to her belly from which she asked an audience member to pull out one but to return it inflated, he willingly did as she said. We all did her bidding, even when she took my purse and coat, as well as things belonging to other audience members, and piled them on the stage we readily acquiesced to her request.

She is her unique brand of charming wackiness that plays with wit and sorrow, reflecting on the holidays in its doubled-edged meanings. Festivities of pleasure with family and friends juxtaposed to those who deal with loss and loneliness. She is cynical when she yells at two little girl singers in sweet outfits to schnell in an irreverent German accent and adorable when she impishly addresses the audience on an array of topics. She teases and plays with the set as a child runs amuck. In between, she serenaded…
