THE THIN PLACE, A SPOOKY NEW PLAY AT PLAYWRIGHTS HORIZONS
REVIEW:
‘The Thin Place’ is an unexpected trip to the metaphysical world for Lucas Hanth ‘A Doll’s House, Part 2', ‘Hillary and Clinton’. It’s about the place between here and there, in other words between the other side and this reality which also could be an alternative representation. Who knows, really?
The play revolves around Hilda, a peculiar woman of “gifts.” Early on in her childhood, her mother thwarted her budding psychic abilities after finding Hilda’s grandmother writing a word on a pad then asking the child to tell her what had been written without it being shown to her. After that grandma was banished; thrown out of their lives never to be seen again; later Hilda would learn of her death. Hilda played by Emily Cass McDonnell is wonderfully odd and monotone in speech; cool in disposition, she seems otherworldly so it’s no wonder that when she meets cunning and charismatic Linda (Randy Danson) an alleged psychic who seems to be confident and able to tell her that grandmother is well and on the other side, Hilda latches on to her new friend.
Eventually Randy admits that she’s more or less a good guesser and has great intuition, making people feel better about what is “the thin place’ and their loved ones who have moved on.
